Chucky is planning a big-screen comeback! Child’s Play and Chucky creator Don Mancini was at the Steel City Con in Pennsylvania this weekend and revealed that he is writing the next instalment in the long-running Child’s Play/Chucky franchise. Mancini is hoping to reset the series again in a similar vein to what Curse of Chucky did in 2013, but the film will be connected to the recent Chucky TV series and previous films. There will be more of a focus on horror, like the original two films.
The Child’s Play franchise began in 1988 with the character of Charles Lee Ray, a serial killer who transfers his soul into a Good Guy doll and becomes Chucky. The tone drifted into more comedy with Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky before Mancini reset the series with Curse of Chucky.
After the success of the direct-to-video sequels – 2013’s Curse of Chucky and 2017’s Cult of Chucky, Mancini then made the Chucky TV series, which ran from 2021 to 2023. Over the course of three seasons, the show brought back many legacy characters from the films and expanded the franchise.
Unlike the last two films, which skipped theatres, Mancini is hoping the new film will be released theatrically this time.
